...militarizing space for 'peace' potentially leading to a space militarization arms race? That's a very interesting thought. It was great to see Michio Kaku talking to the public about these issues and their impact, as well as hearing Dennis Kucinich's views on the matter.

Thanks for sharing.

Too bad. I am a european, but I will accept whatever it takes for humans to get a permanent presence in space. Get me right, I completely loathe US foreign politics. But getting in space *before it is too late* is more important than (even) that consideration. Can democratic institutions provide the impetus to develop a permanent presence in space? I am deeply concerned politicians can not, do not have the vision, not before we suffer a societal collapse.

Oil is running out. Alternative energies have terrifying limitations and costs. The US is currently governed by an elite class of oligarchic bastards, but I'd take those above humanity being stuck in the gravity well.

If all those well-intentioned politicians and spokespeople in the above movie don't like it, why don't they accept this whole "realpolitik" stance of the US? Get with the program, stop your whining and compete with the US. Get a program in space. Maybe then you have a basis for negotiation. If you don't, your powerful and should shut up. The US has clearly chosen fascism in its foreign politics. That means - survival of the fittest. That means you have no other alternative than compete.

To the ESA, to India, to China, to Russia - get off your collective asses.

Yes, let's compete to hell!

here's a better alternative:

What about using private industry to get to space? I know governments have had the monopoly of space for decades, but projects such as we're seeing with the Xprize are inspiring a private race towards space.

This is a much better alternative than a militarization of space leading to a global arms race.

I acknowledge that humanity needs to survive off this rock ASAP. I do think, however, that we don't necessarily need a military arms race in order to accelerate our space faring technology and capabilities. We can have alternatives without acting imperialistic and telling everyone we don't give a damn about their worries, because to us, ours are the only ones that matter.

International, collaborative approaches would be awesome too!
by Navras, on January 23 2008:
I'm all for the militarization of space for the following reason: we need weapons in space to blast off or shield off against asteroids, gamma rays bursts, solar storms and similar problems that can both threaten life as well as threaten our technological infrastructure.

Do I want a single nation to decide how these weapons should be used? No.

I am yet unconvinced that it would be wise for any nation alone to have the global responsibility to wield such power.

I would very much prefer that the implementation and control of such weapons were in the hands of a global entity representing all the people of this planet. The organization should have the best interests of the human race in mind, not those of corporations, a imperialistic government or a small group of nations.

I suggest we implement and research defensive technologies for space, but perhaps this can be done via collaboration, such as has been done at the international space station and other projects.
