"When we look at modern man, we have to face the fact that modern man suffers from a kind of poverty of the spirit, which stands in glaring contrast with a scientific and technological abundance. We've learned to fly the air as birds, we've learned to swim the seas as fish, yet we haven't learned to walk the Earth as brothers and sisters."

Thank you very much Arlind.
I wonder, what you guys think about the problem Martin Luther King talks about in this speech. Do you disagree or agree that for all these advancements in technology, human unity stagnates while technological progress continues? Is there a poverty of the spirit? If you agree or disagree, why is that? How would you address this issue?
Just yesterday I was watching the "I have a dream speech" right here on thoughtware.tv. Here is the link if you'd like to watch it again:

Here are my thoughts on the matter:
The riches of the world can be meaningless to a person that lies completely empty inside.
To me there is no greater poverty than that of human indifference.
A person that is indifferent to the needs of others but himself, promotes Selfishness; He who is indifferent to knowledge and truth, promotes ignorance. One who is indifferent to suffering, promotes cruelty. This is what I consider to be spiritual poverty. This is what I think Martin Luther King was referring to.
One does not have to look very far to see how much injustice has been allowed to permeate human history due to indifference. If I were to address this issue, I'd concentrate on eliminating human indifference.

"For one who is indifferent, life itself is a prison. Any sense of community is external or, even worse, nonexistent. Thus, indifference means solitude. Those who are indifferent do not see others. They feel nothing for others and are unconcerned with what might happen to them. They are surrounded by a great emptiness. Filled by it, in fact. They are devoid of all hope as well as imagination. In other words, devoid of any future." - Elie Wiesel
"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference." - Elie Wiesel (Oct. 1986)

Quotes by
Martin Luther King
Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.
I refuse to accept the idea that man can not influence the unfolding events that surround him.
Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
Life's most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: - 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
