Thoughtware.TV is proud to promote SENS Research and the Methuselah Mouse Prize, by sponsoring the Methuselah Foundation.

SENS is a detailed plan for curing human aging. It is an engineering project, recognising that aging is a medical condition and that medicine is a branch of engineering. Aging is a set of progressive changes in body composition, at the molecular and cellular level, which are side-effects of essential metabolic processes. Many of these changes are eventually bad for us -- they are an accumulation of damage, which becomes pathogenic above a certain threshold of abundance.

Aging, ageing, (or senescence) is not recognized by any government as a target for medical intervention, even though the difference between aging and hereditary disease is only a matter of time. This leaves a niche for this research foundation.

I'd regard developing and using treatments against aging (and living substantially longer) a basic human right and I'd assertively lobby or vote out of power any politician opposing that ideal. If we have enough resources the first human being living to 200 years has been born decades ago. Aging is a disease. Diseases are to be cured. And we demand this for every single human being, rich or poor.
by Navras, on March 10 2008:
Dagonweb makes a very important point. I think his statement was simple, powerful & concise. The following is an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on the term "disease":

"The identification of a condition as a disease, rather than as simply a variation of human structure or function, can have significant social or economic implications. The controversial recognitions as diseases of post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as "Soldier's heart," "shell shock," and "combat fatigue;" repetitive motion injury or repetitive stress injury (RSI); and Gulf War syndrome has had a number of positive and negative effects on the financial and other responsibilities of governments, corporations and institutions towards individuals, as well as on the individuals themselves. The social implication of viewing aging as a disease could be profound, though this classification is not yet widespread."

I think aging is most definitely a disease. Wikipedia defines it as: "..an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions, associated with specific symptoms and signs. In human beings, 'disease' is often used more broadly to refer to any condition that causes discomfort, dysfunction, distress, social problems, and/or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person. In this broader sense, it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities, disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts and for other purposes these may be considered distinguishable categories."

[--- Idea Request ---]

While this has nothing to do with the video, it has a lot to do with a new system for classifying videos for you at Thoughtware.TV. I would appreciate ideas as to which categories you would find useful and would capture the general interests this community has in common:

+ Academia
+ Artificial Intelligence
+ Artificial Life
+ Biodiversity
+ Biology
+ Biosphere
+ Biotechnology
+ Brain Machine Interface
+ Computation
+ Consciousness
+ Cosmos
+ Cybernetics
+ Cyberspace
+ Cyborg
+ Economics
+ Engineering
+ Evolution
+ Existential Risk
+ Future
+ Gaming
+ Genetics
+ Hacking
+ Hardware
+ Health
+ Human & Machine
+ Human Machine Interface
+ Immortality

+ Longevity
+ Megaverse
+ Metaverse
+ Nanotechnology
+ Nature
+ Neuroscience
+ Other
+ Physics
+ Psychology
+ Politics
+ Posthumanity

+ Rejuvenation
+ Robotics
+ Science
+ Security
+ Simulation
+ Singularity
+ Society
+ Software
+ Space
+ Technology
+ Transhuman
+ Universe
+ Universal Evolution
+ Virtual Worlds

I've added a few similar to see which you'd prefer. So...what do you think? Too many? Too few? If it were up to you, which would you add, merge or remove? It'll help you get a sense of what a video is about before you watch it, as well as match categories you might be interested in.

A few more:

+Bionic
+Implants
+Entertainment

I think the first two could be merged into Cybernetics. I'm unsure whether you'd be interested in having subcategories, but let me know if thats the case.

by Andres, on March 11 2008:
+ Internet
+ World Wide Web
+ Swarm Intelligence
+ Cyberculture
+ Mathematics
+ Chemistry
+ Experiment
+ Mind Uploading
+ Molecular Nanotechnology
+ Molecular Fabrication
+ Education
+ Ethics
+ Astrobiology
+ Tissue Engineering
+ Rejuvenation

Terms like:
+ Enhancement, should probably be attached to a more general category, such as Transhumanism.

Perhaps "+ Virtual Worlds" could be replaced with a simpler "+ Virtual" category, for videos such as:

Virtual Evolution
"Demonstration of genetic algorithm research results shows simulated block creatures performing various evolved behaviors."

3d View Of A Rama Object
"A CGI fly through of a 'Rama', as inspired by the novel Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke. Created by Eric Bruneton. Music: Miserere by Henry Jackman."

Don't worry about a video falling into multiple categories, the thoughtbots with a little help from you guys, will figure that out and have the best matching categories stand out for a given video, etc.

This was extremely helpful. Much thanks to each of you who contributed. :)
by Donjoe, on March 15 2008:
Nice video, but maybe it could've been nicer. I don't think it's clear enough in stating "aging is a disease" or "old people are just sick people taught not to want to be healthy again" etc.
