Just imagine how much time it takes to create something like this. As you can see from the watermark, Screampoint designed this digital version of NYC.

How big a PC would you need to run this real time? How fast an internet connection to run this for multiple users in an online environment? ... stereoscopic 3D?
So, when can we have this on a portable PC to look/use/interact where ever we go (starbucks)?
Why isn't someone working on a virtual reality / augmented reality or games of this quality on the consumer level yet?
GTA4 - sure, but that is just peanuts.
I want stuff to emerge FASTER.

Well It seems they're building NYC for Prototype, and the quality looks very good.

Perhaps once Google Earth gets more detailed, you'll be able to have this, maybe even build games around it. As to CPU, its likely World of Warcraft takes more space than this as it is now. You might not need to load the entire city into memory all at once, instead load into memory the areas closest to a user and those close to his field of view, if it is an online environment, with enough detail to make it seem like the entire city is running in real time, as the user moves you can load what he might see next, in the background, so it is already buffered. Similar to the strategy they employed in developing the Matrix MMORPG.
I'll find out if they'll make it available for download, so you can browse through it. In the mean time Google Earth's 3d version of NYC is nice:
