I don't know what to believe. Even watching the video, I can understand why he is doing it, cause the first thing that comes to my mind is: Is he thinking? If that's so, then... what he could be possibly thinking about to do that?

Well think about this:
It could be that the elephant is doing this out of repetitive, learned behavior, which means its mind has some awareness of what it has to do to achieve the goal...or its mind is aware of a concept that its trying to portray. Either possibility is an impressive achievement.
